Project: Made Thought Store

Project facts

Client: Made Thought
Date: Completed 2019
Location: Covent Garden, London
Size: 100 sqm

Project description

Made Thought Store was an experimental retail space in Soho, London which ran for 3 months in 2019. The project was designed for the creative agency Made Thought.

The brief was to create a new type of retail environment where brand, culture and commerce intersected. On the ground floor, a series of stacked recycled concrete blocks created monolithic stepped plinths that allowed various objects to be displayed at different heights. The plinths were designed to resemble how concrete blocks are typically stacked on construction pallets when being delivered to building sites around the city. A continuous Valchromat shelf ran around the perimeter, the monochrome but richly textured material palette was designed to allow the eclectic objects to take centre stage.

In the basement the space was kept ultra-flexible to allow a diverse programme of events and brand partnerships to take place. These brand experiments crated a new and experiential way to discover their products.

A long plinth ran through the centre of the space, establishing a clear circulation route.
Objects were loosely arranged so that it was intentionally unclear whether they were for sale or for display.
Made Thought T-shirts, candles and notebooks were displayed alongside experimental bio-materials.
Bespoke benches were made from softwood timber and excess concrete block slips.
The plinths were made using a mix of rough and polished recycled concrete blocks, with the polished blocks on the top layer creating a smooth surface onto which the object were displayed.
A continuous shelf made from Valchromat lined the perimeter of the ground floor room. This was used to display objects and large prints as well as hanging t-shirts on bespoke shelf brackets below.
